Daum Nancy Pitcher & Ewer Guide
There are two big things to remember when attempting to value a pitcher or ewer made by Daum Nancy.
FIRST – A lot of handles have broken off and have been glued back. Or they have broken off and have been replaced with a reproduction handle. If you are considering making a purchase then please pay careful attention to the handle.
SECOND – While relatively rare, pitchers and ewers do trade at a discount compared to similar vases. There just is not a tremendous amount of demand for either item. They are typically outliers in many traditional art glass collections.
The pieces on the right and left are pitchers. The piece at center is a ewer. There are definitely other shapes and styles out there. It is not uncommon to see silver overlays. That does not make a piece more valuable. In fact, many collectors prefer pieces without added silver mounts.
There is a general misconception that anything with a spout at some point in time had an intended purpose as a serving vessel. That is simply not true. All Daum Nancy art glass was sold as decorative objects. No one was buying a pitcher to use at tea. With that said, what they were used for in past generations is anyone’s guess.
